V. Review of Progress Report 2009

A. Overview of Performance and Progress presented by Valerie Capitulo

We are currently a solid “A” and Quality Review has labeled us “well-developed.” Currently PS 101 is in good standing.

We need to increase parent involvement in surveys. We are on par with the city average for parent participation-45%. SLT members discussed not “going green” and allowing parents to complete paper surveys during Parent Teacher conferences. School Environment is the area in which we can make the most change.

B. Analysis of Learning Environment and Attendance presented by Irtis Gonzalez

Possible reasons for low marks may be due to misinterpretation of the survey questions. SLT discussed wording of goals as part of the problem with results. We need to move “agree” to “strongly agree.” Parent Association meeting should address some of these issues so parents are aware of how the survey is worded and scored.

SLT members discussed increasing home-school communication. Teachers can communicate expectations through newsletters, rubrics, and helpful comments on homework, tests, etc…Newsletters should be available online. Parents should be checking the PA website, www.PA101.org regularly.

Email needs to be viewed two-three times a week. Some teachers check more frequently, such as daily, however, it is not a contractual obligation. If there is an emergency-parent needs a response within 48 hours- notes should be sent through folders.

Teachers will discuss their preferred method of communication at “Meet the Teacher”. If you do not get a response from a teacher, in a timely manner, inform administration.

We have achieved our goal of increasing school attendance.

We may have to start defining terms on the surveys and using similar terms when sending communication home to the parents.

Parents need to know that everything is transparent and ARIS is an important resource.

VI. CEP Updated Draft Goals/Objectives and Action Plan

SLT members discussed “beefing up school libraries” through financial support. Increase in non-fiction literature. Pair non-fiction books with the Book of the Month.

Professional collaboration is important in improving student achievement. Parents may need workshops on using ARIS.

Differentiated instruction can be grouped by ability, learning style and product.

SMART goals will be emailed back and forth to SLT members for additional input. We can make goals measurable by quantifying them through learning environment survey, i.e. percentages.

SLT members discussed an Interim Learning Environment Survey for parent feedback. Possible subcommittees to create ways to fix weak areas of progress report. Pull out top three weaknesses and use exact questions on midterm survey.

Small subcommittee will come up with the interim survey and tally results. Parents will be asked what works for them and how could we improve. Goal is to create these surveys in time for November Parent Teacher conferences so parents can fill them in while they wait for their appointment.

CEP –SLT needs to meet to tweak goals. Goal and Action Plan are the most important parts. Need to agree on the Actions and stick to them.

Non-fiction needs to be infused into the curriculum. Concerns will be discussed at Literacy/Data grade meetings. Science textbooks are being used. SLT members requested more pairing of non-fiction and fiction texts. Looking at new materials from book representatives in science and social studies.

VII. Agenda Items for Next Meeting:

a) Quick review of Math and ELA test scores.

b) Science and Social Studies summary sheet (not an item analysis) of strengths and weaknesses.

IX. Adjournment

Meeting was adjourned at 4:15 PM.
