FROM THE PRINCIPAL

School Year 2008-2009

September, 2008

WELCOME BACK!

It was wonderful to greet so many returning friends and also new faces this morning.  We have done lots of planning for this year and it will be filled with wonderful experiences and opportunities for your child's academic and social growth.

Please review the following important information about our school policies, procedures and guidelines:

Time Schedule & Procedures

Students not participating in morning extended day are expected to be in school by 8:40 a.m. A child in grades K-6 who arrives in school after 8:40 a.m. is considered late and will be issued a late pass. That pass is to be brought home for your signature, so you are aware of this lateness. The signed pass must be sent back to your child’s teacher the following day. Please cooperate by having your child arrive on time. A major factor in determining your child’s success is attendance. Work begins promptly after arrival, so lateness means your child misses critical instruction and also disrupts the teacher and other students as work begins.

Supervision of the children in the schoolyard begins at 8:30 a.m. The children riding the school bus will be escorted to the lunchroom upon arrival at school.

Morning Lineup Protocol

Children in Grades K-6 line up in the schoolyard on fair weather days. At the first bell, students in grades 3-6 walk unescorted, to their classrooms. Students in K-2 wait on line, for teachers to walk them to classrooms.

When the weather is inclement, children will lineup as follows:

  • Grades K-3 will line up in the gym

  • Grades 4-6 will be seated in the auditorium

Breakfast is free and available for all students. It is served at 7:40 a.m. for morning extended day students and beginning at 8:15 a.m. for all other students.    up

Afternoon Dismissal Protocol

  • Pre K students will be dismissed at 2:15 p.m. from Exit 3 Front

  • Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 2:50 p.m. from Exit 6

  • Students in grades 1-6 will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m.  Those attending our after school program or going to an outside after school program will gather in the rotunda or auditorium, supervised by school aides. Please note the specific Exit Doors for all students not attending after school programs:

  • Grade 1 - Exit 5 (side door)

  • Grade 5 – Exit 4

  • Grade 2, 3 & 4 - Exit 3 Rear (schoolyard)

  • Grade 4 & 6 - Exit 2 (Main Entrance)

Please be prompt in picking up your child.  Notices regarding the PA-Sponsored after school program will be forthcoming

Class Sessions:

If your child is to be included in our Extended Day Programs, you will receive a separate letter informing you about the schedule and mandates for those programs. For all other students the official school hours are Monday – Friday from 8:40a.m.-3:00p.m.    up

Emergency Procedures:

If you need to pick up your child early due to child’s illness, doctor’s appt., etc.) bring a picture I.D. to be presented to the Security Agent. Your child will be released only to individuals whose names appear on the blue EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD. This is for your child’s safety. Please complete the cards that are being sent home. Include the names of relatives/friends who are responsible and dependable. Also provide several emergency contact phone numbers including at least one working cell phone number so that you can be reached immediately, in the event of an emergency. If a phone number or other information changes, please write a note to your child’s teacher requesting that the EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD be updated. Also note that if you need to change dismissal arrangements on a particular day, we must have a written note, in advance, from you.    up

Preparation for School Work

It is imperative that students report to class ready to work. Supply lists were provided in June, and are also available on our school website: http://www.PS101Q.org

Each day, your child should come to school prepared with the following:
1. At least two sharpened pencils and, in upper grades a blue or black pen.
2. Appropriate notebooks and school supplies
3. Required textbooks, covered
4. Completed homework.

Send a note or email to your child’s teacher requesting a meeting or conference, if questions arise concerning any aspect of the school or class program. Discuss class work and projects with your child and review his/her notebooks, journals, homework and test grades. By staying informed you can help prevent problems before they seriously affect your child’s performance. We invite you to join us for a Curriculum Night on September 25th at 6:00 P.M. Meet our staff and listen to an overview of the year’s curriculum.  A good stat to the school year is essential for success.

Absence:

After an absence and on the first day back to school, a note signed by a parent, detailing the reason for the absence, MUST be given to the child’s teacher. If an absence is three days or longer, a doctor’s note is required. If your child contracts a serious illness or sustains an injury necessitating a cast, boot, sling, crutches, etc., we must have a doctor’s note. If necessary, we will contact you to discuss alternative arrangements to accommodate your child. When your child is able to return to school and/or no longer needs crutches, etc., a doctor’s note including the phrase “child can return to school” and detailing any restrictions (e.g. “no gym” or “ resume full activity”) should be included.

Pupil lateness and absence directly affect the quality of class work and homework. Please consider this when planning family vacations. An extended absence before or after a school break is considered illegal, unless your child is ill and you have medical documentation. Your child’s permanent record reflects all absences.

Moving:

Please notify Ms. Geier in our Main Office, if you are moving or your child will be  attending another school. We will need your new address and telephone number as well as the name/number of the new school. We are required to send records directly to the new school.  up

Medication:

Do not send any medication or inhalers to school with your child. We are not permitted to administer medication unless there is a 504 Form completed and on file for your child. If you need this form, please contact our Parent Coordinator at (347) 563-4449. Once a 504 form is approved, our nurse supervises dispensing of the medication.   up

Homework Policy:

Homework is your child’s responsibility and should be completed each night. It is a factor in evaluating and rating a pupil’s overall performance. Your child’s teacher will provide specific information regarding grade and class homework guidelines. In general, parents are expected to monitor and assist, as appropriate. If there is a problem, encourage your child to request help from the teacher. It is the teacher’s responsibility to make sure all students understand and can complete the homework.

The Following is an appropriate guide to length of time to be spent on homework:

Kgn - Grade 1 20 Minutes Grades 3 & 4 45 Minutes
Grade 2 30 Minutes Grades 5 & 6 60 Minutes

The above time blocks do not include time spent reading aloud or silently, each night.

Lunch Program

Children who were eligible to receive free or reduced price lunch last year will continue to do so until a new application is submitted and reviewed. We encourage kindergarten parents to send their child to school with cold lunch for the entire month of September, if at all possible.

They are learning new routines and procedures, and this will make their adjustment to eating in the large cafeteria much easier. There will be a morning snack time especially for students in grades K-2, and a healthy snack (fruit and juice) is recommended since theirs is the late lunch hour.

Lunch/Milk money will be collected on Thursday, September 4th and if you  pay for school lunch, your child will begin to receive it on September 4th. Beginning with the first collection, monthly collections will be made.

Every child must submit a lunch form. Even if your child will not be having school lunch and you are not interested in applying for free or reduced lunch, please write
“Not Interested” on the application, and return it to your child’s teacher. New York State closely monitors the return of these forms and expects us to collect a signed form for each student who attends our school.

The following is our lunch schedule:
Gr. 3-6 11:50 – 12:40
Gr. K-2 12:40 – 1:30

Celebrations/Birthdays

Small treats (e,g, cupcakes or munchkins) may be brought in from home on your child’s birthday. No goody-bags at birthday parties please. Please also consider donating a book to your child’s classroom library in honor of his/her birthday. A special book plate will be created and affixed to the inside front cover, acknowledging your donation and giving the name of your child. Look for a separate letter outlining specifics regarding celebrations and our classroom book donation program.  up
